Back Pain & Disc Degeneration
Chronic low-back pain linked to degenerative discs.
About this condition
Degenerative disc disease is a leading cause of chronic back pain. Candidates are carefully selected after MRI review.
How we approach it
We review imaging and mobility history, then consider image-guided local injections of mesenchymal stem cells or exosomes, often paired with rehabilitation guidance.
Therapies we may consider
How to prepare
- •Gather your records: diagnosis letters, recent lab results, imaging reports (MRI, X-ray, CT) and a medication list.
- •Keep taking prescribed medication — we never ask you to stop treatment from your own doctor.
- •Ask your specialist whether they are willing to share notes with our physicians; coordinated care is safer.
- •Write down your main goals and current symptoms (for example, pain on a 0–10 scale or walking distance) so we can measure change honestly.
- •Plan your trip: most programs need 2–5 days in Los Cabos, and you should avoid long flights for 24 hours after joint procedures if possible.
Possible side effects
Depends on the therapy your physician recommends. Most are mild and short-lived.
Mesenchymal Stem Cells
- · Mild fatigue, low-grade fever or chills in the first 24–48 hours after infusion
- · Headache or mild nausea
- · Soreness, swelling or stiffness at the injection site for a few days (joint injections)
- · Bruising at the IV site
Selected published research
Treatment of knee osteoarthritis with autologous bone marrow MSCs and hyaluronic acid: a randomized phase I/II trial
Lamo-Espinosa JM et al., J Transl Med, 2016
Patients receiving MSCs reported better pain and function scores at 12 months than those receiving hyaluronic acid alone.
Intra-articular injection of MSCs for osteoarthritis of the knee: a proof-of-concept clinical trial
Jo CH et al., Stem Cells, 2014
Improved knee function and pain, with the best responses at higher doses.
Mesenchymal stem cells for knee osteoarthritis: systematic reviews and meta-analyses
Multiple authors, 2019–2023
Reviews generally find short-term pain improvement with a good safety profile, but call for larger, standardised trials.
